Five Steps For Starting Up an Affiliate Marketing Campaign

When you need a boost in web traffic to your website, you don’t always have the luxury of time. While search engine optimization is a great way to boost organic web traffic, it can’t compete with the immediate effectiveness of PPC and other affiliate marketing campaigns. Whether you’re investing in pay-per-click, pay-per-call, or other affiliate marketing strategies such as third party blogs, there are five steps for creating a great affiliate marketing campaign.

Determine affiliate marketing goals

If you’re considering affiliate marketing, chances are you’re looking to boost web traffic, and fast. But that goal alone is too vague. To be successful with affiliate marketing you first have to set clear goals. You have to decide  how much a new customer is worth to you. How much can you afford to spend on a new customer in order to still remain profitable? How much can you invest in affiliate marketing? The more clear your goals and your budget, the more effective your affiliate marketing efforts can be.

Know your audience

If you’re new to affiliate marketing, chances are you’re on a tight marketing budget. Failing to know and understand who your target audience is a sure fire way to waste a lot of those precious marketing dollars. Make sure you know exactly who your target audience is and learn as much about them as you can. The more you understand your audience the more you can tailor your strategies to reach that audience without wasting marketing dollars.

Study your competition

It’s good to learn from your mistakes. It’s even better if you can learn from others’ mistakes. Studying the competition is a great way to discover what works and what doesn’t without making those poor choices yourself. Of course you want to make your affiliate marketing campaign your own but it doesn’t hurt to take inspiration wherever you can find it, even if that’s from your competitors.

Analyze data

If you’re not measuring conversion data, you can’t possibly know how effective your efforts are. It’s important that throughout your affiliate marketing campaign you’re paying attention to conversion data. Pay attention to which keywords, which affiliates, and which ad copy are driving traffic and which ones aren’t. Armed with that information, you know where to invest marketing dollars going forward.

Optimize strategies

Remember that your affiliate marketing campaign can always be made better. Never become complacent with where you’re at. If you’re not moving forward you’ll start moving backwards. You should be constantly experimenting with new strategies, new affiliates, new keywords, and new channels to find what works. As you experiment and track the results, you can constantly fine tune and improve your strategies.
